Alexei Navalny died on Feb 16 in unclear circumstances.

Ottawa:

Canada introduced new sanctions on Sunday in opposition to six Russian officers following the loss of life of opposition chief Alexei Navalny final month in an Arctic jail colony.

The sanctions goal ”senior officers and high-ranking workers of Russia’s prosecution, judicial and correctional providers,” an announcement by Canada’s overseas affairs division mentioned.

The six individuals ”have been concerned within the violation of Mr. Navalny’s human rights, his merciless punishment and in the end, his loss of life,” it mentioned.

”Alongside our companions, Canada will preserve stress on the Russian authorities to conduct a full and clear inquiry into the loss of life of Mr. Navalny,” International Affairs Minister Melanie Joly mentioned in an announcement.

”This elevated stress on the Russian authorities sends a transparent sign that human rights should be unequivocally revered.”

After the loss of life of Alexei Navalny, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s most vocal critic, the Canadian authorities summoned Russia’s ambassador to ”demand a full and clear investigation” into his loss of life.

Navalny died on February 16 in unclear circumstances in a penal colony within the Arctic, the place he was serving a 19-year jail sentence for ”extremism.” He was 47 years previous.

His household and allies have accused the Kremlin of ordering him killed and Western leaders have mentioned Putin is ”accountable” for his loss of life.
