tremor rocks Melbourne and state’s south early Friday


An earthquake within the early hours of Friday has rattled Melbourne and plenty of elements of Victoria.

Geoscience Australia reported the quake’s epicentre was close to the South Gippsland city of Leongatha, about 135 kilometres south-east of Melbourne.

Preliminary estimates measured the quake as a magnitude 4.3, with a depth of seven kilometres.

Residents took to social media inside minutes, reporting they’d been woken by the quake.

The Bureau of Meteorology reported there was no tsunami risk to the state on account of the tremor.

Adam Pascale from the Seismology Analysis Centre, who lives in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, mentioned many individuals throughout town would have felt the quake.

“I’m positive that lots of people throughout town have felt this one … and there could also be aftershocks persevering with, however we’ll see”, he mentioned.

A number of different tremors have been reported in Victoria over the previous 12 months.
