Colombo:

The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 10 Indian fishermen and seized their trawler for allegedly poaching within the island nation’s waters, an official assertion stated on Monday, two days after 12 fishermen from India had been apprehended on related fees.

The fishermen had been arrested, and their trawler seized on Sunday north of Level Pedro, Jaffna, the Sri Lanka Navy stated in a press launch.

The ten apprehended fishermen had been escorted to the Kankesanthurai harbour and will probably be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for additional motion, it stated.

On Saturday, as many as 12 Indian fishermen had been arrested, and their three trawlers seized for allegedly poaching within the island nation’s waters.

The fishermen subject is a contentious one within the ties between India and Sri Lanka, with Lankan Navy personnel even firing at Indian fishermen within the Palk Strait and seizing their boats in a number of alleged incidents of illegally getting into Sri Lankan territorial waters.

The Palk Strait, a slim strip of water separating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka, is a wealthy fishing floor for fishermen from each nations.

There have been periodic cases of Indian fishermen being arrested by Sri Lankan authorities for allegedly crossing the Worldwide Maritime Boundary Line and fishing in Sri Lankan waters.

In 2023, the island nation’s Navy arrested 240 Indian fishermen together with 35 trawlers for poaching in Sri Lankan waters.
